BIDDEFORD, Maine, Dec. 6, 2024Water service and fire protection share a long, collaborative history going back centuries and continues to this day. The Saco River Drinking Water Resource Center showcases pieces of that history.

When a fire breaks out, firefighters need large quantities of water to battle the fire. Maine Water installs, maintains and tests hundreds of fire hydrants throughout the service area to make sure they are ready to go when an emergency happens and also monitors water supplies.

But it doesn’t stop there, frequent communication also needs to take place on any changes to the system or any needs that need to be addressed to meet the common goals.

The museum-like display represents another aspect of the ongoing collaboration with fire departments, featuring historic firefighting items donated by area fire departments along with items showing the history of water service in the area. Some of those items include hose nozzles, an ax, firefighters’ gear and more.
